Holiday Recipe Guide
Herbes de Provence is a blend of dried herbs typical of Provence, France. Herbes de Provence is used to enhance the flavor and depth most traditionally of poultry, such as roasted chicken or turkey. However, it is a wonderful complement to pot roast, redskin potatoes, salmon, flank steak, as well as roasted vegetables and stews. Even sprinkle on popcorn for a new favorite!
Herbes de Provence is a fragrant, heady herbal blend. Therefore, it should be used sparingly. The mixture is most often used as a seasoning to poultry and meat prior to cooking, while a nice sprinkle ½ - 1 tsp, is wonderful added to cooked redskin, smashed potatoes or grilled vegetables. 1-2 tsps can be used for a medium sized roasting chicken, or pot roast.
Formerly simply a descriptive term referring to herbs typical of Provence, in the 1970s, commercial blends started to be sold under this name. Traditional mixtures typically contain savory, fennel, basil, thyme and lavender and other herbs, though lavender was not used in traditional Southern French cooking.
Nellie’s Lavender Estate grows and harvests all the herbs used in Herbes de Provence in organic compost, pesticide-free soil. Our proprietary blend consists of: Marjoram, Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary, Basil, Lavender, Sage and Fennel combined with sea salt and black peppercorn. This unique blend marries the flavors found in both Northern and Southern French cuisine.
